Title: Duped Pdf Double Lives, False Identities, and the Con Man I Almost Married
Abby Ellin's writing is everything her fiancé pretended to be: witty, vulnerable, brave, smart, and honest.―Michael Finkel, author of the National Bestseller, The Stranger in the Woods"Candid and entertaining, Ellin's book offers insight into the socially and psychologically complex nature of deceit as well as the choices she made as a duped woman. Lively, provocative reading."―Kirkus ReviewsAbby Ellin is an award-winning journalist and the author of Teenage Waistland: A Former Fat Kid Weighs In On Living Large, Losing Weight and How Parents Can (and Can't) Help. Loved this Book!!! Abby Ellin is an amazing story teller! Hey, we all get duped (some of us do the duping) ....I couldn't put this book down! Somehow she makes it seem all okay in the end and to just trust your gut when you think it may be happening to you!why? because they can The author, Abby Ellin, has been romantically duped by a con man. Somehow a nebbish looking James Bond type character was able to topple her hard question asking inquisitive nature and fool her. The author wrote an article about her experience for Psychology Today and from the number of responses the article got she decided to explore how and why people con each other and why people fall for it. Having interviewed a few such con men the reasons range from "I did it for a cause bigger than myself" ( animal rights activist), for fun, for the excitement, for money, for sex, etc. In other words as many explanations as there are people. Several psychologists are quoted with such insights as " some people don't feel things" as in your suffering doesn't register, it's irrelevant. They just don't care if people's lives are ruined aka Bernie Madoff. Then to top it off the author falls for another lying loser! Because, once you have been duped you are actually easier to fool a second time! hahah Several places in the book the author bemoans the fact that victims are often blamed as much if not more than the con man is. I suppose it's hard to admit that they enjoyed the fantasy too, so the 'little things they brushed aside" didn't register. I didn't finish the book, I read about 75% of it. I felt the book was one long narrative to try to explain to you why she and others get fooled but it falls short. In fact I don't think there is any answer beyond "because they could" . The only people I would feel compassion for are the young who get fooled. Having less life experience does make you more open.Riveting Read--and Chock Full of Information Even if you've never been duped, you've got to wonder about what motivates those conmen and why anyone would fall for their antics. Well, wonder no more. This is no con when i tell you that Ellin is a witty and smart writer. You'll be gripped by the narrative and intrigued by the science of it all.
